Is Sonography a Good Career for You

Ultrasound sonography is a medical treatment performed on women who are pregnant or patients who may be ill. Sonography equipment provides technicians with pictures of the inside of the human body which can show disease or abnormalities in almost any part of the human body. You may be wondering, is sonography a good career for you to get into? The truth is that there are many factors which could make sonography a great career but you need to take a few things into consideration before you make your final decision. Below are a few tips on deciding if sonography is the right career choice to make.
Is Sonography a Good Career?

One of the first questions you will want to ask yourself is whether you enjoy working in the medical field. If you have never worked in a medical career before you may have trouble answering this basic question, but ask yourself a few questions:

• Do I like working with people? Sonographers work very closely with patients and they are often present for emotional times in their lives such as during a pregnancy or medical scare. Sonographers need to be able to work with patients, nurses, physicians, and other hospital staff.
• Can I handle sonography school? There are a few routes to becoming an ultrasound technician. The most common education path is attending a vocational or technical college and earning an associate’s degree. Schooling can take two or more years to complete and most of the classes are highly medical or science based. Some people do very well in a sonography school environment while others end up having difficulties. Research schools and programs extensively before you decide to make sonography your career choice.
• Can I handle the physical and emotional requirements? Sonographers often work on their feet and they need to be able to lift heavy weight including patients when necessary. Additionally, sonographers should have good eyesight, hearing, and high communication skills. Ask yourself whether you are ready to handle the physical and emotional requirements which may be very different from anything you have worked in thus far.

So, is sonography a good career choice for you? Only you can answer that question. However, a lot of people choose to make sonography their career path every year and many of them go on to love their job and the people they work with. Keep in mind that like any other job sonography can have its good and bad days. As long as you love what you do you should have no problems in your position as a sonographer.
